Grammar student scores outstanding achievement

14 June 2016

Geraldton Grammar School student Eliza Singleton (16) received an outstanding achievement for her cultural performance at the Hanyu Qiao (Chinese speaking) competition in Adelaide over the weekend.

Representing Western Australia, Eliza was required to complete three tasks at the competition – a 3 minute speech in Chinese on what her Chinese dream is, a written test carried out in Chinese characters, and a cultural performance.

Although she is still awaiting her overall results, Eliza was given an Outstanding Achievement for her cultural performance – in which she sang in Chinese whilst performing a Chinese fan dance.

Eliza Singleton said the experience was amazing and that the trip to Adelaide over the weekend was incredible. “It all went so fast but it was a great experience. It ended up being really fun, even though I was really nervous,” said Ms Singleton.

Geraldton Grammar School Principal, Nick Johnstone, said Eliza’s achievements were remarkable given she’s only been speaking Chinese Mandarin for 3 years.

“Eliza was asked by Professor Chu from the University of Western Australia, to compete in the competition and so she set that goal for herself, worked hard and stay focused and the results speak for themselves. She has done herself and Geraldton Grammar School proud,” said Mr Johnstone.

Eliza’s love of the language came from participating in the school’s cultural exchange program to China last year and studying at Zhejang University during a camp this year.
